A holiday rich in history?
Around the Lac du Causse, there are a number of sites to visit that showcase the local heritage and its inhabitants. Among the beautiful spots that adorn Corrèze, the team has selected a few gems to visit as a priority! Of course, that's up to us, so you can find out all about our local attractions here.
Conquering the Gaillarde!
Brive has always been ideally located and has always been able to develop its reputation. So why the Gaillarde? A fortified town since the 12th century, its alliances with neighbouring lords and alliance strategies have made the town a free and strong territory! In fact, at the end of the Second World War, Brive was the first town to be liberated by its own efforts! With its Renaissance, classical, Romanesque and Gothic architecture, and the collegiate church (pictured), Brive is a city full of character and life!
Climb to Yssandon!
Certainly higher than the Lac du Causse! Discover the Yssandon region through the pretty villages of Objat, Ayen, Juillac and Perpezac-le-Blanc... On the programme: geology and an agricultural culture based on walnuts, apples and cattle, to name but a few... The best time to go? Sunday morning, market day in Objat, to taste the local produce before taking a walk through this tasty region !.
Take Allassac by stormously!
A treasure in the heart of the "Gorges de la Vézère" , the village of Allassac and its César tower, a listed historic monument, welcome you all year round. This is the only remaining 17th-century military structure in the Limousin. But before you get there, make a stop at the Jardins de Colette: a poetic and floral trail revealing the life of the famous writer.
And that's not all! You can then stop off at the Pans de Travassac to discover the craft of slate-making and its ancestral know-how. Finally, the pretty village of Le Saillant and its medieval bridge will take you to the chapel whose stained-glass windows were painted by Marc Chagall.
Heading south!
But before you descend too quickly, we suggest you stopover in the pretty village of Aubazine, where the Cistercian abbey will tell you all about the time when Gabrielle Chanel stayed there. Take a good look at the stained glass windows and you'll recognise something familiar.
Before heading off to Turenne, make a stopover in Jugeals-Nazareth: the churches of Saint-Gilles and Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth are rich in history and numerous anecdotes of all kinds, not least those about the Jewish community that the village welcomed at the height of the Nazi movement.
Then on to Noailles and its Gouffre de la Fage, surely one of the most beautiful caves in the region! And depending on the season, you may even have the chance to admire entire colonies of bats.
Did you say Plus Beau Village...?
In Corrèze, there are no fewer than 5 Plus Beaux Villages de France. And did you know that this label was created in our department? And if you want to go even further than Martel, Beaulieu-Sur-Dordogne, Saint-Robert or Curemonte, to name but a few... we'd also advise you to visit our neighbours in the Lot to discover their local nuggets: Rocamadour, Autoire, Loubressac... there's plenty to see and do just a few minutes from the campsite!
